Hobart College junior Danny Cabrera was named the Harrow Sports Male College Squash Player of the Week yesterday. Cabrera helped the Statesmen to a 2-1 overall record at the 2015 Pioneer Valley Invitational.
Cabrera played all three of his matches at No. 8 forcing five games in each match. In Hobart’s first match of the day, against Stanford, Cabrera defeated Peter Satterhwaite, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8. Hobart upset No. 22 Bowdoin in the afternoon match. Cabrera faced Polar Bear first-year George Cooley. Cabrera captured the first two games, but Cooley battled back to tie the match at two games apiece. In the fifth game, Cabrera won 11-6 to capture the match and a vital victory to the Statesmen win. In Friday’s loss against No. 23 Colby, Cabrera was one of two players to force five games. He won game one 11-1 and then notched an 11-8 win in game four to force the decisive fifth game.
Cabrera has played in 11 matches this season compiling a 6-5 record while competing in the No.6, No.7 and No.8 positions in the lineup.
Hobart (7-5) will be back in action this weekend at the Wesleyan Invitational. The Statesmen will face Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston University on Saturday, and Wesleyan and Connecticut College on Sunday.
