Students, faculty and staff members of the Hobart and William Smith community are preparing for the 13th annual Literary Volunteers of Ontario-Yates Spelling Bee, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. in the Geneva High School auditorium.
Participating under the team name Beewildered, Associate Professor of Art and Architecture Lara Blanchard, Associate Professor of Classics Leah Himmelhoch and Director of Leadership Giving Ruth Benedict. The HWS faculty/staff team has a 4-1 record.
Since 1967, Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates has provided reading tutoring and education to illiterate or struggling adults in Ontario and Yates counties. Last year, the spelling bee raised nearly $5,000 for books and other materials necessary for the organization’s tutoring programs.
Members of the HWS community can support the cause by attending the event on Sunday. The fundraiser will also consist of a used book sale, for which Newell is collecting donations. Monetary donations are also deeply appreciated and will go towards the faculty team entry fee.
For details about how to donate for the spelling bee, please contact event promoter Professor of Biology Elizabeth Newell for details at firstname.lastname@example.org. To learn more about Literary Volunteers of Ontario-Yates, please visit their website.
