The Hobart College tennis team downed visiting Oneonta 9-0 in its first match of 2015. The Statesmen improve to 3-0 on the season.
Hobart jumped out to a 3-0 lead sweeping doubles play. Senior Michael Fields and sophomore Matt DePrima won 8-4 in the top spot. First-year Harry Nichols and sophomore Michael Rusk cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 2. Sophomore Danny Kot and senior Luke DeLuccia closed out the doubles portion of the match with an 8-4 victory.
Fields collected his second win of the day at No. 2 singles. He bested Mackenzie Park of Oneonta 6-1, 6-0. After a couple of long points, Rusk clinched the match for the Statesmen winning at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2. First-year Miles Singer continued Hobart’s dominance winning 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. With the match in hand, DePrima and first-year Colin Marker’s matches went to tiebreaking third sets. DePrima bested Cole Laffitte 6-4 in the first game, Laffitte took the second game 2-6 and DePrima finished his match off with a 10-6 victory in the tiebreak. Marker dropped his first game 6-3, before winning 6-2 in game two and 10-5 in the tiebreak. Nichols won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.
Hobart will be back in action March 11, when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
