Peter Cummings, HWS professor of English and comparative literature, has had a sonnet, “Shakespeare and Italy,” accepted for publication in “The Shakespeare Newsletter,” now a quarterly journal.
The sonnet is the first of 10 in a set called, “Shakespeare and Italy: Sonnets on the Travel Problem.”
The journal's editors are limited in space for poetry, and have offered to include the following note: “This poem is the title sonnet in a set of 10 addressing the still-vexed question of Shakespeare's travel to Italy before he began his 20-year career of writing for the theatre in London.”
The set asserts that he did know Northern Italy firsthand — at least for a short period of time.
The newsletter is published quarterly by the English Department at Iona College in New Rochelle.
