The William Smith College varsity eight was named the Liberty League Women’s Rowing Boat of the Week by the conference office on Monday, March 30th. The Herons defeated conference rivals Rochester and St. Lawrence on Sunday in their first race of the spring season.
Racing on a 1,700-meter course on the Genesee River in Rochester, William Smith’s top crew of Susan Tuvell, Emma Dow, Emily Andersen, Caroline DeWeirdt, Karoline Loretan, Sophia Wensberg, Anola Stage, Laurie VanBenschoten, and Alex Belden drew the outside lane assignment. To give themselves extra time to negotiate the outside of the course’s turns, the Herons, ranked seventh in the nation, made sure to seize an early lead. By the time they reached the final turn, they had an open-water lead on the Yellowjackets and Saints. William Smith continued to build its lead through the finish line, stopping the clock at 7:43.96. No. 15 Rochester was second, 20.73 seconds back with St. Lawrence finishing third 6.98 second behind the Yellowjackets.
This is the third boat of the week award for the Herons this season, having previously captured two in the fall racing season. The varsity eight earned the award after the William Smith Challenge on the Canal in September and the novice eight was honored after the Head of the Fish in October.
The Herons will be back on the water on Saturday, April 4 when they race No. 3 Wellesley, No. 5 Washington (Md.), and New Hampshire in Geneva, New York.
