The Hobart College tennis team collected two of the Liberty League Men’s Tennis Weekly Awards this afternoon. Senior Michael Fields and sophomore Matt DePrima were named the Doubles Team of the Week, while first-year Harry Nichols was tabbed the Rookie of the Week by the conference office Monday, March 23rd. Fields also earned a spot on the weekly honor roll for his singles play.
The Statesmen went 3-0 during their spring trip to Orlando, Florida. Hobart defeated Grinnell 5-4, Luther 5-4, and Colby-Sawyer 9-0.
Fields and DePrima won all three of their matches at No. 1 doubles. On Tuesday, March 17th, against the Pioneers, Fields and DePrima clinched the match for the Statesmen. They defeated Grinnell’s Elliott Czarnecki and Tommy Pitcher 8-2. Later that afternoon, against the Norse, Fields and DePrima edged Anders Jensen and Sam Cychosz 8-6. Fields and DePrima completed Hobart’s Southern swing with an 8-6 win over Justin Pinard and Andrew Peloquin of Colby-Sawyer.
Fields and DePrima are 9-3 when playing together this season, including a 5-1 record in the top doubles spot.
Nichols, who receives the Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season, posted a 2-1 record in Orlando. On Tuesday, against the Pioneers, he defeated Bryson Cale 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4 helping the Statesmen jump out to a 4-2 lead at the conclusion of singles play. Nichols collected his second win of the week at No. 3 singles on Thursday. He defeated Colby-Sawyer’s Justin Pinard 6-1, 6-1. Against the Norse, Nichols lost in a super tiebreak, 6-2, 4-6, 12-10, at No. 4.
Nichols is 10-5 overall this season, including a 2-0 mark at No. 2. He has played throughout the middle of the lineup this season.
Fields was named to the weekly honor roll after posting a 3-0 week in singles play for the Statesmen. In Tuesday’s match against Grinnell, he went to three sets winning, 6-0, 6-7, 10-4, at No. 2. Against Luther, also at No. 2, he went to three sets defeating Sam Cychosz 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Against the Chargers, Fields won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Fields, a senior captain, owns a 6-6 record this season, including a 3-1 record at No. 2 singles.
Hobart returned to the courts Tuesday, March 24th when they travel to face Ithaca. The match began at 4 p.m.
