The William Smith College tennis team collected all three of the Liberty League Women’s Tennis awards this week. Senior Haley Wolf was named the Singles Performer of the Week, Wolf and sophomore Hannah More garnered Doubles Team of the Week honors and first-year Michaelann Denton was tabbed Rookie of the Week.
The Herons won all three of their matches last week to improve to 7-7 on the season. On Wednesday, they defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 8-1. On Saturday, they collected a pair of 9-0 victories over SUNYAC opponents Cortland and Oneonta.
Wolf, who was playing in her last three matches at the HWS Tennis Center, posted a perfect 3-0 record on the week. Against the Tigers, she did not drop a single game, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. In Saturday’s first match, against Cortland, Wolf defeated Mary Kopcienski, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1. In her second singles match of the day, Wolf knocked off Brynn Sussman of Oneonta, 6-3, 6-1, in the top singles spot.
Wolf is currently 8-6 overall this season, including a team-best 3-0 at No. 1 singles.
More and Wolf were undefeated at No. 1 doubles this week. On Wednesday, against RIT, they defeated Sara Bjork and Paige Baker 8-3. In Saturday’s doubleheader, More and Wolf collected a pair of 8-2 victories in the top doubles spot. Against the Red Dragons of Cortland the duo beat Shannon Grodotzke and Mary Kopcienski and against the Red Dragons of Oneonta, they beat Brynn Sussman and Michelle Spencer.
More and Wolf have been the No. 1 doubles team for all but one match this spring. They are currently a team best 8-5 in doubles play.
Denton won all three of her matches this week to remain undefeated this spring. Against the Tigers, she rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles over Diane Wang. Denton moved up to No. 2 singles for both of Saturday’s matches. Against Cortland, she bested Shannon Grodotzke, 6-1, 6-3. In her afternoon match, she defeated Kelly Gochan 6-0, 6-2.
Denton is a team best 15-2 this season in singles play and has won her last 13 matches.
William Smith will look to continue its three-match winning streak on Thursday, April 23, when they travel to Ithaca, New York.
