The Hobart College rowing team’s varsity eight was named the Liberty League Boat of the Week by the conference office Monday, April 27th. The Statesmen won their 10th consecutive conference championship behind the varsity eight’s convincing victory.
Powered by coxswain Sam Zuckerman, Austin Letorney, August Wherry, Robert McNamara, Julien Green, Brett Lawhon, Matthew Sylvan, W. Hunter Holtz, and Joe Biesemeyer, Hobart cruised to 13.69-second victory over RIT. The Statesmen eight stopped the clock at 6:29.07. Hobart remains unbeaten in the varsity eight race at the Liberty League Championship, winning every race since the championship was inaugurated in 2004.
The next day, on Lake Quinsigamond, in Worcester, Massachusetts, Zuckerman, Letorney, Wherry, McNamara, Green, Lawhon, Sylvan, Holtz and Biesemeyer took on Holy Cross, Bucknell, and Williams. The Statesmen varsity eight engaged in a tight battle for first place with the Crusader’s top boat, which is ranked 20th in the USRowing Collegiate Poll. Holy Cross narrowly defeated the Statesmen, crossing the line nine-tenths of a second ahead of Hobart.
The Statesmen will be back on the water on Saturday, May 2, in Princeton, New Jersey. Hobart will compete against No. 11 Navy, No. 18, Columbia and George Washington.
