The William Smith College tennis team had two players honored by the Liberty League this week. Junior Sydney Arsenault and first-year Michaelann Denton were named the Liberty League Doubles Team of the Week while Denton was named the Liberty League Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week.
Last week, the Herons turned in a 2-1 record, rebounding from a 5-4 loss to Ithaca on Thursday with a pair of Liberty League wins this past weekend. On Saturday, William Smith swept Bard 9-0 and on Sunday, they defeated Union 8-1.
Arsenault and Denton combined to win all three of their matches at No. 2 this week. Against the Bombers, they bested Marni Blumenthal and Allison Vizgaitis 9-8 (7-5). Against Bard, they cruised to an 8-0 victory. On Sunday, Arsenault and Denton defeated Margaret Oppenheim and Emily Newman 8-3.
As a team this spring, Arsenault and Denton are 7-3 at No. 2 doubles and have won six matches in a row.
Denton, who was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the second straight week, went a perfect 3-0 this week playing at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles. On Thursday, she defeated Ithaca’s Allison Vizgaitis, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0 at No. 3. Against Bard, Denton did not lose a single game, defeating Beryl Taylor 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. At Union, on Sunday, she beat Margaret Oppenheim, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3.
Denton is a team best 18-2, including a 16-0 record this spring. Denton has played a majority of her matches between Nos. 2-4 singles.
William Smith will return to the courts to close out its regular season on Wednesday, April 29, when it travels to Clinton, New York, for a match against Hamilton 4 p.m.
