From musical performances and food trucks to outdoor movies and toasts, Senior Week at HWS is offering up a range of activities for the Classes of 2015 as excitement builds toward Commencement.
The fun continues Thursday, May 14, with Senior Field Day on the Scandling Café Patio from 2 until 4 p.m. for an afternoon of games and snacks under the sun. The traditional procession of the senior classes with President Mark D. Gearan to the senior dinner at Houghton House will begin at 6:30 p.m. in front of Coxe Hall.
At Houghton House, enjoy gourmet dining under the tent while listening to Assistant Philosophy Professor Rodmon King give an undoubtedly inspiring senior send-off speech. Immediately following, join your classmates in the Vandervort Room for the Presidential Toast and performance from the always popular Garage Band kicking off at 8:30 p.m. to close out the night!
The President’s Garage Band will feature: Hobart Dean Eugen Baer, Religious Life Secretary Patty Blue ’77, Sodexo cook Joe Calabrese, Associate Professor of English Rob Carson, Associate Professor of Biology Mark Deutschlander, Professor of Media and Society Les Friedman, William Smith Dean Catherine Gallouët, Assistant Professor of Philosophy Rodmon King, Professor Emeritus of Economics Jo Beth Mertens, Associate Professor of Chemistry Justin Miller, friend of the Colleges Paul Quartaro, friend of the Colleges Dave Rogers, Professor Emeritus of Sociology Jim Spates, Professor of Economics Bill Waller, Digital Learning Consultant Stan Weaver and Associate Professor of Dance Cadence Whittier.
Seniors Michelle Poulin, of the band Call Security, and Nick Stewart will perform a number with band as well.
Assistant Director of Student Activities Jessie Marullo-Stamp, who planned the events with Class Presidents Tatyanna Jack’15 and P.J. McInnis’15, shares her excitement in this event.
“My absolute favorite Senior Week tradition is the Champagne Toast from President Gearan and his Garage Band! Everyone gets dressed up for the Senior Dinner at Houghton House for a beautifully served dinner and then heads back to the Scandling Campus Center to continue the celebration,” says Marullo-Stamp. “It’s such a blast to hear the band play while everyone is dancing and singing along!”
On Friday, Commencement rehearsal will take place on the Quad at 2 p.m., with an address from Christopher S. Welles ’84 and Catherine Whitney ’83 Welles P’12, P’15.
Following at 3 p.m., William Smith students will congregate on William Smith Hill for the William Smith Alumnae Association Senior Welcome Toast and a tree planting ceremony in honor of the nurseryman William Smith. Alternatively, Hobart students will assemble at 3:15 on South Main Street above the Bozzuto Boathouse dock for the Hobart Launch Ceremony.
Festivities will reconvene on Stern Lawn from 6 to 9 p.m. for the Senior Barbeque and fireworks. Entertainment will be provided by The band Classified as well as three Hobart and William Smith student a cappella groups — Perfect Third, Three Miles Lost, and the Hobartones.
