William Smith College first-year forward Catherine Linehan and first-year goalie Maggie Salmon were honored at the annual William Smith Athletics Awards Banquet on April 21. Linehan was awarded the inaugural Ice Hockey Coaches Award while Salmon received the inaugural Ice Hockey Award.
Linehan played in all 25 games for the Herons this season. She finished the season second on the team in goals (5), and points (10) and fifth on the team in assists (5). Linehan collected her first collegiate point on an assist against UMass Boston on Nov. 1. Her first collegiate goal came on a power-play opportunity against Utica. In the Herons first varsity win, Linehan notched an overtime power-play goal to win the game for William Smith. Her three power-play goals were also the second most on the team.
Salmon played in 15 games, starting 14 between the pipes for the Herons. She turned aside 593 shots to record a .908 save percentage and a 4.28 goals against average. Salmon was named the ECAC Women’s West Co-Rookie of the Week following a 4-0 shutout of Cortland at The Cooler. The shutout was the first in program history and Salmon’s first career win. She recorded a season-high 58 saves against Neumann in November.
William Smith finished its inaugural season with a 3-20-1 overall record, playing its best hockey down the stretch against some of the nation’s top teams. In both games against No. 1 Elmira, the Herons were within one goal during the third period, and against No. 9 Oswego, William Smith was tied heading into the third period. In the season finale, the Herons blanked Cortland, the sixth seed in the conference tournament 4-0.
