Two seniors on the William Smith golf team, Kara Capstraw and Maddie Carens were honored at the William Smith Awards Banquet on April 21. Capstraw was named the Most Valuable Golfer, while Carens received the Golf Coach’s Award.
Capstraw played in a team-high 16 rounds this year. She led the team with a career-best 90.1 scoring average. Capstraw carded a season-low round of 84 during the second round of the Anne S. Batchelder Invitational. She logged a third place finish at the William Smith Invitational. At the Liberty League Championships, she finished tied for 19th.
Carens played in eight rounds in her senior season. She finished fifth on the team in scoring average. Carens carded a season-low 95 on Day 2 of the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational. She finished eighth against Mount Holyoke and 17th at the Hamilton Tournament. Carens was named the Most Valuable Golfer for the 2011-12 season.
William Smith posted a season’s best second place finish at the William Smith Invitational in September. The Herons improved on last season’s 395.9 scoring average by 17.6 strokes to 378.3.
