Geneva Music Festival to Return to HWS

Since the founding of Geneva Music Festival, HWS has served as the community project’s home base. This June, with two chamber music concerts to be held in the Geneva Room of the Warren Hunting Smith Library, the festival and its star-studded cast of musicians return to the Colleges. On Friday June 12 at 7:30 p.m., world-renowned performers Ani Kavafian and Clive Greensmith will present the music of Dvorak, Kodaly and Schubert. Following this, on Friday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m., founding members of the festival will return to the venue with a program featuring Mozart, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

The Geneva Music Festival has announced its most diverse line-up yet for its 5th annual concert season, which runs from June 5- 21. Greensmith, former cellist of the Tokyo String Quartet, and Kavafian, violinist and professor at Yale School of Music, will return to join GMF director Geoffrey Herd, violinist Eliot Heaton, the dynamic ensemble New Morse Code (composed of cellist Hannah Collins and percussionist Michael Compitello), and many others. New to the Geneva Music Festival this season is the Thomas Bergeron Jazz ensemble.

“We have incredible engagement from so many people who want to be involved in the festival, turning it into a regionally-acknowledged entity,” explains Herd. “Each year, we have had a huge expansion in programming and the number of people involved-that says much about our community, as well.”

The Festival is proud to offer an exciting variety of sounds this summer, including classical chamber music, improvisatory jazz, high-octane fiddling and bluegrass, and dynamic ventures in contemporary music. GMF 2015 audiences will be treated to a repertoire brimming with exciting music. Highlights include Schubert’s masterful String Quintet in C Major, the passionate piano trios of Ravel, Turina and Brahms, smooth jazz, new works, and much more.

Friday, June 5 will mark the beginning of the 2015 concert season: a weekend round of piano trio concerts featuring cellist Clive Greensmith, violinist Geoffrey Herd, and pianist Christopher Janwong McKiggan in Geneva, Canandaigua, and Skaneateles (June 5, 6, and 7).

With partnerships in the local arts community, venues that offer audiences sensory-pleasing experiences, and a drive to give back to its supporters, the Geneva Music Festival has made sure that it will continue its promising conversation.

“Every week, we have more good news,” says Herd. “Every week, someone new wants to be involved or has a new idea. There’s a constant enthusiasm flowing into the festival.”

Tickets to each performance are $20, with the exception of the Boys and Girls Club Concert on June 11, which is free. Students 18 and under are welcome at all concerts at no charge. All venues are wheelchair accessible and air conditioned.
