The Hobart College rowing team will travel to Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, New Jersey, for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships which are set to begin Friday, May 29. For the second straight year, the Statesmen will battle the nation’s best crews in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and third varsity eight events.
The three-day championship will be webcast by D3cast.com with live results available at ira.qra.org.
As a varsity program, Hobart is making its 11th overall appearance at the national championship regatta. Last year, the 1V finished 19th after winning the fourth level final, the 2V finished in 21st and the 3V placed 17th.
The Statesmen have medaled seven times at nationals, capturing gold in the freshman four in 2003 and the varsity pair in 1993 and 1994.
Receiving votes in the latest USRowing poll, the 1V will race in its opening heat on Friday at 8:45 a.m. Hobart will face a talented and deep field that includes No. 4 Northeastern, No. 5 Princeton, No. 12 Cornell, No. 13 Dartmouth, and Drexel, which is receiving votes in the poll
The Statesmen 2V8 will take to the water at 9:30 a.m. Hobart will be pitted against Brown, Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Princeton.
The 3V will wrap up the first morning of competition at 10:24 a.m. Hobart will face Pennsylvania, Princeton, Yale and Wisconsin.
The top two finishers in each heat will progress to Sunday’s semifinals with the other four crews racing in Friday afternoon’s repechages.
The Statesmen’s varsity eight captured gold medals at the Liberty League championships this spring and silver medals at the ECAC NIRC and the Knecht Cup. Hobart ranked as high as 20th in the USRowing poll this spring.
The 2V collected gold medals at the Liberty League Championship and ECAC NIRC while winning a silver medal at the Knecht Cup. Hobart’s 3V took home gold medals at the Knecht Cup and Liberty League Championships and returned with silver medals from the ECAC NIRCs.
