The William Smith College novice eight was voted the 2014-15 Liberty League Novice Crew of the Year by the conference’s coaches. It’s the ninth time in the past 11 seasons that the Herons have won the award. Additionally, four Herons were named to the All-Liberty League Women’s Rowing Team.
First-years Alyssa Deem, Kylie Wyskochil, Emily O’Brien, Emily Smith, Elizabeth Warren, Katherine Hesler, Nicole Guardino, Lauren Pomerantz, and Alexandra Townsend captured the gold medal at the Liberty League Championships. The Herons covered the 2,000-meter Fish Creek course in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 8:21.2, nearly eight seconds ahead of the runner-up.
William Smith finished its championship schedule by securing a silver medal at the New York State Championships and a fourth place effort at the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships.
The only novice crew to earn a Liberty League Boat of the Week award, William Smith claimed the honor after a fourth place finish (2nd among Division III crews) at the Head of the Fish, also on Fish Creek, during the fall racing season.
Representing William Smith on the All-Liberty League team are seniors Emma Dow and Anola Stage, junior coxswain Susan Tuvell, and sophomore Laurie VanBenschoten. All four women were members of the Heron varsity eight that won a gold medal at the Liberty League Championships, defeating runner-up RIT by 1.2 seconds. William Smith’s top crew won three Liberty League Boat of the Week Awards and finished the season ranked ninth in the nation in the CRCA/US Rowing poll.
William Smith won all four events it entered (V8, 2V8, N8, V4) at the Liberty League Championships and secured its fifth consecutive and eighth overall conference title.
