William Smith sailors competed in the 2015 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women’s National Semifinals in Newport, Rhode Island, May 25-26. The Herons will be vying for a spot in the national championship which was held on May 27 and 28.
William Smith earned a spot in the semifinals after a finishing fifth at the MAISA Women’s Dinghy Championships in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. At the conference championship regatta, sophomore Christine Moloney and first-year Sarah Warren finished fifth in B Division, recording top-10 finishes in all 12 races. In the A Division, senior Liana Folger and first-year Haley Okun finished in seventh place.
Folger is expected to serve as skipper in the A Division with first-year Erica Oosterhoff serving as her crew. Moloney will serve as the skipper and Warren will be the crew in the B Division.
Twenty-eight teams will begin competition on Memorial Day for the national championship. The field will be split into two 14 team semifinals with the top nine finishers in each semifinal advancing to the championship round. Wednesday and Thursday, the 18 remaining teams will compete for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy awarded to the national champion.
In 2014, the Herons placed seventh out of 18 teams at the championships in Annapolis, Maryland. Last season’s seventh place finish was the highest finish in program history. William Smith has competed in the women’s national championship 15 times since 1999.
