HWS sailing completes spring at Gill Coed National Championship

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team completed its 2014-15 racing season by competing in the Gill/Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Coed Dinghy National Semifinals in Newport, Rhode Island. The Colleges finished 10th of 18 teams in their semifinal, missing out on qualifying for the national championship by one spot.

The 36 teams that qualified for the semifinals on June 1-2 were divided into two 18 team semifinals with the top nine teams in each semifinal advancing to the finals. HWS was placed in the eastern semifinal.

In A Division, senior Elliott Morrill served as skipper while first-year Sarah Warren and sophomore Adam Schaefer competed as crew. The Colleges finished ninth, notching top 10 finishes in nine races. 

Junior Eddie Cox served as skipper for HWS in B Division with first-years Erica Oosterhoff, Parker Trepton, and Noah Barrengos filling out the crew, finishing 10th. The boat finished in the top 10 six times, including a second place finish eighth race.

College of Charleston won the semifinal with Georgetown and Boston College rounding out the top three. Tufts Coast Guard, Navy, Fordham, SUNY Maritime and Harvard also advanced out of the eastern semifinal to tomorrow’s national championship.

HWS has appeared in 15 ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship regattas since 1996. The Colleges also competed in the women’s dinghy championship finishing 10th of 14 teams in their semifinal.
