Hobart Head Football Coach Mike Cragg recently announced five Statesmen will serve as the team captains for the 2015 season. On offense, senior quarterback Parker Thelander and senior running back Conner Hartigan will lead the way, while on defense senior linebacker Jacob Stanley, senior defensive tackle Tucker Gumkowski and senior linebacker Trayvon Toney will be captains.
“We are thrilled with who the team has selected as captains. They are great leaders both on and off the field. They are looking forward to leading our football program into the season,” said Cragg. “They had a chance to learn from some outstanding leaders before them and they will do a great job for us.”
Thelander played in all 13 games in 2014. He garnered All-Liberty League second team honors as a punter, averaging 34.2 yards per punt. Thelander logged 17 punts that pinned the opponent inside its own 20 and boomed three that covered more than 50 yards. He completed a key 6-yard pass on third down and 4 from the Hobart 45 during the game-winning drive in the NCAA playoffs against Ithaca. He matched a season long with a 53 yard punt in the NCAA quarterfinal at fourth-ranked Wesley.
Hartigan started all 13 games last fall and earned all-league second team honors. He ranked fourth in the conference with nine rushing touchdowns and ranked third in rushing yards per carry (5.5). Hartigan was fourth in the Liberty League in total rushing yards (871). The two-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree ran for 100-plus yards in three games.
Stanley garnered D3football.com All-East third team honors on special teams as well as all-conference second team honors at linebacker in 2014. A starter in all 13 games, he ranked third in the conference with 93 tackles. Stanley tied for the league lead in fumbles forced (3) and tied for third in fumbles recovered (2). He tied for eighth in the Liberty League with five sacks. Stanley registered at least three tackles in every game.
Also a starter in all 13 games, Gumkowski finished the year ranked seventh on the team in tackles and fifth in tackles for loss and sacks. He logged at least one tackle in 12 games. Gumkowski notched a season-high eight tackles, including a season-high 3.5 for loss, in Hobart’s victory over Rochester.
A unanimous selection to the 2015 All-Liberty League first team, Toney started all 12 games he played in. He ranked third in the conference in total tackles with 93. Toney recorded at least three tackles in every game he played in. He produced a season-high 15 tackles and forced and recovered a fumble in a win over Springfield. Toney also garnered all-league first team honors in 2013.
The Statesmen will begin their 122nd varsity season at Dickinson in Carlisle, Pa., on Sept. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Hobart will welcome back 43 lettermen, including 11 starters from 2014’s 12-1 squad.
