The William Smith College soccer team will begin the 2015 season ranked No. 10 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in its preseason poll. The Herons finished 2014 with a 16-3-1 overall record.
This is the eighth straight year the Herons have been ranked in the top 25 teams in the nation in the NSCAA’s preseason poll. Last season, William Smith captured its eighth straight Liberty League regular season and tournament titles. The Herons advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament and were ranked No. 11 in the nation in the NSCAA’s final poll.
William Smith graduated five seniors from the 2014 roster. The Herons bring back four of their top five scorers from last year’s squad, including NSCAA All-East and All-Liberty League first team selection Kara Shue. Shue led the team with 12 assists and ranked second with 26 points. Senior Krista Longo, an NSCAA All-East and All-Liberty League second team pick, will also be back for the Herons. She ranked second on the team with 10 goals last year and added five assists for 25 points.
In 35 seasons, Head Coach Aliceann Wilber has produced a 496-128-55 (.771) overall record, tallying more wins than any other coach in NCAA Division III women’s soccer.
The Herons will open 2015 with the Bob Baptista Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. William Smith will take on the host No. 18 Thunder at 4:30 p.m. CT and then face Emory on Sept. 5 at 11:30 a.m. CT. In addition to Wheaton, the Herons schedule also includes games against two other nationally ranked teams, No. 3 Messiah and No. 25 Ithaca.
