Statesmen open season with 2-1 win over Pioneers

The Hobart College soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 2-1 win at Utica College tonight in a non-league game played at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Junior JP White led the Statesmen with two goals in the win.

After a scoreless first half, White put Hobart on the board in the 50th minute. His first goal of the evening came off an assist from classmate Joe Busuttil. Just 4:05 later, White struck again this time off a feed from senior Jacob Fox.

In the 62nd minute, Shane Ruffing scored for the Pioneers to get them within one. Bita Gazashv set up the play. It was the closest Utica could get as the Statesmen defense held strong for the remainder of the game.

Hobart finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 13-2 lead in corners. Senior Tyler Serafine played all 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen and made two saves. Nick Hallett played the entire match in goal for Utica and stopped seven shots.

The Statesmen will travel to Canton, N.Y., this weekend to compete in the 2015 Potsdam College Cup. Hobart takes on Plattsburgh on Sept. 5 at 1:30 p.m. and then faces Potsdam on Sept. 6 at 1:30 p.m. The games will both be played at SUNY Canton.
