Alumnus wins directing competition

Matthew Johnston ’04 recently won the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers Scholarship award for Region II.

The award includes an all-expenses paid trip to the 38th annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, April 17-23, in Washington, D.C., where the national scholarship will be awarded.

While there, he will represent all Region II directors by directing a 10-minute play and compete for a scholarship to a summer intensive program as a resident director. Also at the festival, his work will be seen by representatives of more than 20 regional theatres, as well as some of the leading theatre artists in the country who will be leading workshops.

While at HWS, Johnston appeared in the February 2003 Bartlett Theatre production of David Mamet's “The Water Engine,” directed by David Dannenfelser.
