The Hobart College rowing team completed its fall season at the Cornell Fall Invitational on Saturday. The Statesmen competed against Cornell, Syracuse, and Mercyhurst.
“We had a solid day of racing, but the results indicate we have valuable seconds to make up heading into the spring season,” Head Coach Paul Bugenhagen said. “The fall is a heavy training period for us, and this race helps clarify where the squad is at and where we need to go. I’m pleased with the personal development that’s occurring within the team and hungry to mold the individual strengths into team speed come the spring.”
Hobart competed in pairs, fours and eights on the Cayuga Lake Inlet. The Cornell Fall classic combines a 3500 meter race with a 350 meter super sprint time multiplied by three. The Statesmen’s top pair ofMatthew Sylvan and Patrick Ware finished seventh in overall time. Hobart A was fifth after the 3500m race, turning in a time of 12:49.0. Hobart’s B pair of Davis Muller and August Wherry rounded out the top-10.
In the men’s 4+, Hobart’s varsity four finished sixth. They turned in the seventh fastest 3500 meter time, 11:44.6, and the fourth fastest 350 meter sprint time, 1:00.3(3:00.8 adjusted). The Statesmen were represented by junior Julia Dexter, junior John Hibbard, junior D. Griffin Marsh, senior Brett Lawhon, and senior Julien Green.
Hobart’s novice eight finished fourth out of eight teams in the first flight of the men’s eight. The Statesmen were fifth in the 3500m and the second fastest team in the 350m sprint. The novice eight was powered byMadeline Ventouris, Axel Witt, Brian Helms, Kemal Turksonmez, Dylan Bennett, Steven Bunce, Wade Jones, Scott Hanks, and Steven Ives.
In the second flight of eights, Hobart entered three boats. The Statesmen’s top boat finished sixth out of 15 entries. Coxswain Sam Zuckerman, Milos Milosavljevic, Wherry, Sylvan, Hibbard, Marsh, Lawhon, Muller, and Ware powered Hobart down the course. The Statesmen were sixth in 3500m portion with a time of 10:13.16. Hobart had the third fastest 350m time.
Hobart has completed its fall season. The Statesmen will return to the water in 2016.
