The Hobart College squash team kicked off their 2015-16 at the Navy Round Robin this weekend. The Statesmen posted a 1-3 record, defeating MIT in the final match of the weekend.
Hobart began the weekend against George Washington. The Colonials topped the Statesmen 9-0. First-year Josh Oakley won his first two games 11-7, 11-2 in the No. 1 spot and had match ball in the third game. Moudy Abdel-Maksoud rallied to win the match 3-2. Fellow first-year Ilyas Khan also extended his match to five games. George Washington’s James Reiss won 11-4, 6-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-9. Juniors Beau Orchard and Felipe Pantle, sophomore Jack Shannon, and senior Danny Cabrera all lost 3-1.
The Statesmen’s second match of the tournament was against the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers edged Hobart 6-3. Oakley collected his first collegiate victory in the No. 1 spot. He defeated Mason Blake 3-0. Pantle defeated Stewart Stauton, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 at No. 5 and Cabrera won 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 at No. 8. Sophomore James Pierpont took his match against Campbell Goodman to five games.
On Sunday, the Statesmen fell to host Navy 8-1. Pierpont logged the lone win for Hobart in the No. 9 spot. He defeated Will Walker 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7. Junior Terrance Rose and Khan forced fifth games but could not come away victorious.
Hobart closed out the weekend with a 6-3 victory over MIT. Oakley won in the No. 1 spot, 11-9, 11-8, 12-14, 12-10. Pantle, sophomore Divine Wing, Shannon, Cabrera, and Pierpont won 3-0 at Nos. 5-9 respectively.
Hobart will be back on the courts on Dec. 5, when it travels to Clinton, N.Y. for a pair of matches. The Statesmeen will face Middlebury at 4 p.m. and Hamilton at 6 p.m.
