The nationally ranked William Smith soccer and Hobart hockey teams will be back in action this weekend as the Herons compete in the NCAA tournament and the Statesmen fight to extend their four-game winning streak. The No. 3 Herons will host NCAA sectional matches this weekend on Cozzens Field, while No. 11 Hobart will face off against Elmira College on the road on Friday and Saturday.
William Smith soccer (18-1-1) is slated to take on No. 11 Brandeis (15-2-4) on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. The Herons cruised to a 5-1 victory over Roger Williams in an NCAA tournament second round match played on Cozzens Field on Sunday, Nov. 15. The Judges played to a 1-1 double overtime tie with No. 16 Amherst last week, advancing 3-2 on penalty kicks.
The second game on Saturday will be played at 1:30 p.m. and will feature No. 6 Williams (18-1-1) and No. 14 Stevens (18-3-1). The Ephs defeated TCNJ 3-0 in their second round match, and the Ducks topped Bowdoin 4-1 to advance to this weekend. Saturday’s winners will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Cozzens Field for a spot in the national semifinals.
The Heron defense is among the stingiest in the nation, ranking fourth in Division III in goals against average (0.245) and shutout percentage (.800). William Smith’s 16 shutouts this year are third on the school’s single season list.
Not to be outdone, the Heron offense is the best in William Smith history. The team has tied the record for goals in a season with 63, broken the record for assists with 50 and eclipsed the mark for points with 176. Junior Kara Shue has a team-high 11 assists, two shy of the single season record.
Tickets are $6 for general admission, $3 for students, senior citizens and military personnel, and $2 for children ages 3-12. Fans unable to make it to Cozzens Field can follow the action online with Live Stats and Live Video.
Hobart hockey will hit the ice this weekend in two ECAC West games at Elmira on Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. This week, three Statesmen earned weekly awards from the ECAC West. In addition, the Statesmen were ranked No. 11 in the nation in both the USCHO.com poll and the D3hockey.com poll.
Senior Mac Olson was tabbed the league’s Player of the Week and senior Lino Chimienti was named the Goalie of the Week. First-year Tanner Shaw garnered a spot on the weekly honor roll.
Olson had a hand in four out of Hobart’s five goals in a 5-3 win at Nazareth last Friday night. He registered a hat trick and added an assist against the Golden Flyers.
Chimienti played all 120 minutes in goal last weekend. He logged a total of 50 saves and sported a 2.00 GAA and a .926 save percentage over the weekend. At Nazareth, Chimienti made 24 saves. In a 5-1 win at Utica last Saturday night, he turned aside 26 shots.
Shaw posted three points on a goal and two assists last week. He scored the game-winning goal with 1:53 left in regulation at Nazareth. It was his first collegiate goal. Shaw notched two assists, including one on the game winner, on Saturday.
The Statesmen (4-1-1, 4-0-0 ECAC West) lead the ECAC West by three points over second place Utica. The Pioneers (1-3-0, 1-3-0) are tied for fouth in the league standings.
Also this weekend, William Smith basketball will compete in the Cave Classic at Bridgewater State. The Herons’ will take the court at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hobart basketball will take on the University of Scranton on the road at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Also on the road, William Smith Ice Hockey will face-off against Neumann College on Saturday at 4 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
