For the second week in a row, the Hobart hockey team is ranked No. 3 in the nation in the D3hockey.com poll. The last time the Statesmen were ranked in the top three was in the 2012-13 season.
Hobart is currently 12-2-2 overall and sits in first place in the ECAC West with a 5-1-0 record. The Statesmen extended their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 4-2 win over Curry and a 2-1 victory over Salve Regina in the Vineyard Classic over the weekend. There are only four teams in Division III that are currently riding longer unbeaten streaks.
Hobart leads the ECAC West and is eighth in the nation in scoring defense (1.94 GA/GM) and is second in the conference and 10th in the nation in scoring offense (3.94 G/GM). The Statesmen also have the nation’s ninth best penalty kill. Hobart has killed off 89.0 percent of its opponent’s power-play opportunities and has scored four short-handed goals this season.
Senior Mac Olson leads the team with 10 goals and 17 points. Senior Ben Gamache has also logged a team-high 17 points. He has chipped in a team-high 14 assists. Gamache ranks 13th in the nation averaging 0.93 assists per game. Sophomore Frank Oplinger, who was named the ECAC West Goalie of the Week this week, has played the last four games. He turned aside a season-high 37 shots in the win over the Seahawks on Saturday. Oplinger is sporting a .914 save percentage, a 2.25 goals against average and a 4-1-0 record.
Hobart will be back in action this weekend, when it hosts Nazareth for two ECAC West games in The Cooler. The Statesmen and the Golden Flyers will meet on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m., and again on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m.
