Hobart College first-year Josh Oakley was named the Liberty League Men’s Squash Rookie of the Week following a 4-0 week at No. 1 for the Statesmen in the Pioneer Valley Invitational. Junior Felipe Pantle was named to the weekly honor roll.
Hobart (5-5) opened the 2016 portion of its schedule with a 3-1 record in the Pioneer Valley Invitational hosted in Western Massachusetts this past weekend. On Friday, the Statesmen beat Dickinson 8-1 at Mount Holyoke College. The next day, Hobart beat Stanford 8-1 and Haverford 9-0 at Smith College. The Statesmen were tripped up by Colby, 6-3, in a tightly contested match on Sunday.
Oakley improved his rookie record to 7-3 at the top spot with four wins this past weekend. In Friday’s match, he defeated Dickinson’s Abdelraham Elsergany 7-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8. On Saturday morning, he beat the Cardinal’s Yousef Hindy 3-2 and notched his second win of the day against Haverford’s Nate Vestrich-Shade with a 3-0 sweep. Oakley closed out his tournament with a 3-0 win over Colby’s Will McBrian on Sunday. Oakley has now won six of his last seven matches since starting the season 1-2.
Pantle also turned in a perfect 4-0 record for Hobart on the weekend. He played all four of his matches at No. 5 for the Statesmen. On Friday, he defeated Andrew Strudwick of Dickinson 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6. Both of Pantle’s wins on Saturday served as the match clinchers for Hobart. Against Stanford, he beat Matthew Stevens 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6, while he swept the Ford’s Jonathan Niguyen 3-0. Agaisnt the Mules, he rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win his match 3-2. Pantle is now 6-4 on the season, playing all 10 matches at No. 5.
Hobart will be back on the court this weekend, Jan. 22-23, when it travels to Middletown, Conn., for games against Bowdoin, Wesleyan, and Trinity.
