As the Democrat & Chronicle noted in the Jan. 28 article, “Rochester-area colleges see donations boost,” Hobart and William Smith Colleges saw substantial growth in charitable giving in 2014 — a trend that continued through 2015.
“Donations to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva more than doubled to $20.2 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30 , from the $8.2 million received in 2012-13, said the report from the Council for Aid to Education,” the D&C reports.
Following the Colleges’ most recent capital campaign — which ended in May 2012, with a total of $205 million, surpassing the goal by $5 million — the Colleges continued to receive generous gifts and commitments during the 2013-14 fiscal year, including a $7 million gift to support the endowment.
“Hobart and William Smith are appreciative of the outstanding financial support we continue to receive from alums and parents,” says Bob O’Connor, the Colleges’ Vice President for Advancement. “During the 2014-15 fiscal year, we saw the largest number of donors to the Colleges in nine years. With that momentum and with four months remaining in our 2015-2016 giving cycle, we are outpacing last year’s gifts by 17% and have secured more than $17.5 million in new commitments. Just this past weekend we celebrated the opening of the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts. $28.5 million was donated to the Center, which is home to our dance, theatre, music, and media and society departments.”
