For the second week, the Hobart College hockey team was ranked No. 1 in the East Region in the NCAA Division III Regional Rankings released on Feb. 23. In addition, seven players and Head Coach Mark Taylor were honored by the ECAC West with end of season awards.
The NCAA regional rankings are used to determine both NCAA tournament bids and seedings, making Hobart the No. 1 seed in the ECAC West Tournament. There are three sets of regional rankings that are released to the public. The final regional rankings will be released on March 1.
After a 5-2 win over Elmira at the Cooler on Saturday, the Statesmen are 19-4-2 overall and 12-3-0 in the ECAC West. Hobart leads the conference in scoring offense, scoring defense and on the penalty kill. The Statesmen rank third in the nation on the penalty kill (90.1%), seventh in scoring offense (4.12 g/gm), and ninth in scoring defense (2.00 ga/gm). In addition, Hobart ranks sixth in the country with a .800 team win percentage.
The Statesmen also dominated the ECAC West end of season awards, released on Wednesday. Senior forward Mac Olson headlined the ECAC West Player of the Year, senior forward Ben Gamache was named the Defensive Player of the Year, and Head Coach Mark Taylor was selected as coach of the year for the sixth time and second year in a row.
Olson, senior forward Brad Robbins, junior defenseman Carl Belizario, and senior goaltender Lino Chimienti earned spots on the all-conference first team. Junior defenseman Jon Neal was voted to the second team and Gamache garnered honorable mention. In addition, first-year defenseman Tanner Shaw was named to the All-Rookie Team.
As the ECAC West Tournament’s top seed, Hobart earned a first round bye. The Statesmen will host the lowest remaining seed in The Cooler on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow the action online with Live Stats and All-Access Video.
