The Hobart College rowing team opened its spring season at the Cayuga Duals on the Cayuga Lake Inlet today. The Statesmen varsity eight, which is receiving votes in the preseason USRowing poll, retained the Statesmen Trophy following its morning race against Ithaca.
Donated by the Class of 1996, the Statesmen Trophy is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Hobart and Ithaca. This year marks the first time that the Statesmen and Bombers have competed head-to-head since 2013. Hobart’s varsity eight gained more than a boat length lead at the 1000 meter mark and cruised to a 19 second victory. The Statesmen stopped the clock with a time of 6:15.3 compared to Ithaca’s 6:34.8. Hobart’s varsity eight was powered by junior Julia Dexter, junior John Hibbard, senior August Wherry, sophomore Dilan Bower, junior Austin Letorney, senior Brett Lawhon, junior Matthew Sylvan, senior Patrick Ware, and senior Davis Muller.
In the afternoon’s race, the varsity eight was paired with No. 20 Michigan. The Wolverines stopped the clock at 6:17.9, six seconds ahead of Hobart.
Hobart’s second varsity eight competed against Cornell’s lightweight second varsity in the morning race. The Big Red posted a 14 second victory. In the afternoon, the Statesmen 2V also took on Michigan. The Wolverines topped Hobart 6:10.2 to 6:31.5.
This morning, the Statesmen’s third and fourth varsity eights raced the Big Red’s lightweight third and fourth varsity. Cornell’s 3v won 6:17.5 to 6:31.2 while the 4v won 6:25.2 to 6:49.2. In the afternoon, Hobart’s 3V was pitted against Bucknell’s second varsity eight. The Bison won 6:35.7 to 6:39.8. The fourth varsity rowed against Bucknell’s third varsity. The Bison won again.
Hobart will scrimmage Syracuse next weekend before returning to competition in two weeks, April 9-10, at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, N.J.
