During the 2016 Homecoming & Family Weekend, the Hobart and William Smith Dance Department will host a Dance Alumnae/i Weekend.
Beginning Friday, Sept. 16, three days of classes, lecture presentations, panel discussions and performances will enable HWS alums active in the dance and movement fields to share their work with colleagues and the broader HWS community.
In advance of that weekend, the Dance Department invited dance/movement professionals — scholars, educators and artists — to propose choreography, performances, workshops or presentations.
“We are excited to welcome back Dance alums to showcase what they are doing now and to provide an opportunity for exchanges with current HWS students, dance colleagues and other Homecoming guests,” says Michelle Ikle, associate professor of dance and chair of the department. “We want to show off the new Gearan Center for the Performing Arts and all the fantastic spaces. For many, a performing arts center was only a dream while they were students.”
Dance events are included in the schedule for Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Dance facilities in the Gearan Center include the Deming Theatre, a 5,000-square-foot dance studio that transforms into a 250-seat, state-of-the-art performance venue. The adjacent 2,400-square-foot Dance Studio offers a marley-covered sprung wood floor and functions as a dance rehearsal space as well as a smart classroom and support space for performances.
Proposals for Dance Alumnae/i Weekend included a resume or CV, a 200 to 300 word proposal, and (if available) a video link of the choreography, performance, workshop or presentation. Choreography and excerpts were no longer than eight minutes; presentations and workshops no longer than an hour; and technique classes no longer than 90 minutes.
