Myles Hunt ’11 recently interviewed Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture Patrick Kana ’12 for an article that was published on Punchland, a prominent online magazine with a focus on music and the arts.
The article covers Kana’s development as an artist, ranging from his undergraduate experience at HWS to earning a master’s from the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology. He currently creates custom work for clients and for his own artistic endeavors. “Every piece I make raises new challenges and excitement, and that leads to new ideas for future work,” Kana explains. “So whenever I get the go-ahead from a client or from myself to create something new, I try to pull ideas from that memory bank of challenges and sketches. It’s like an endless chase, but the most satisfying chase.”
While at HWS, Kana was a double-major in studio art and architectural studies, with a minor in environmental science. He participated in various apprenticeships to master furniture makers such as Peter Dudley, Vicco Von Voss and Sam Castner, as well as leading courses on photographic technique during the HWS Arts Experience festival. A member of the sailing team, he graduated summa cum laude in studio art. His senior Honors project demonstrated his burgeoning interest in furniture craft and design, titled, “Production & Design: Crafting a Chair in Light of 20th Century Modern Design.”
Kana recently established Kana Studios LLC in the Geneva Enterprise Development Center as his personal furniture and design studio. He also serves as a studio technician in the Department of Art and Architecture and as an assistant coach of the HWS sailing team.
The author of the article, Hunt majored in arts and education and minored in education. During his time at HWS he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He currently works as a freelance artist with performances and gallery showings, as well as being a review-and-interview writer for Punchland magazine.
