The band PWR BTTM, an American queer punk duo comprised of two Bard College graduates, will perform on the Quad beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. The musicians – Liv Bruce and Ben Hopkins – have been touring the country, promoting their brand and queer rights. The HWS event is sponsored by the members of the recently established theme house Queer People of Color and Alliances or QPoC, in conjunction with Residential Education, the Concert Advisory Committee and Campus Activities Board.
HWS organizer Denzel Degollado ’19 is pleased to help coordinate the event. “I believe that having PWR BTTM perform is a way for QPoC to present an artist who can represent the LGBTQ+ community, to the campus. Our hope as a campus organization is to have individuals come to this event to enjoy and celebrate music, love, inclusion, and the expression of all identities.”
Along with Chanel Andrews ’19 and Ethan Leon ’19, Degollado formed the QPoC theme house under the guidance of Associate Dean of Students Dr. Stacey Pierce last semester. The house is home to 13 students and has created an inclusive space for members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community.
“I believe the reason that QPoC is able to facilitate discourse so effectively is because we reach out to the community, and also provide a space for dialogue,” Andrews says.
The organizers hope this concert builds on that dialogue between students and grows to include others in the community.
“The reason I founded QPoC was to create visibility and community so future students have a home and family waiting for them,” Andrews says.
