Shavonne Ward '09 and Nicole Henderson '08 recently co-presented “The Cathedral Within: Building the Foundation to a Successful First Semester for First-Year students” at the Campus Outreach Opportunity League meeting in Nashville, Tenn.
They made the trip with Katie Flowers, assistant director of public service.
Their presentation was based on the first chapter of the book “The Cathedral Within” by Bill Shore, executive director of Share Our Strength in Washington, D.C., which HWS first-years read and discussed after completing service activities during Orientation weekend in August.
The book's premise is that cathedral builders died before they saw their life's work in completed form; the students are encouraged to think about the four years they have to serve their campus and extended community, and how their efforts could have a lasting impact.
Ward and Henderson, sponsored by the William Smith deans office, were among 1,500 students at the annual conference at Vanderbilt University.
