In its high-circulation weekend edition of April 7-8, Poland's most influential daily newspaper, Gazeta Wyborcza, published a long and favorable review of “The Defeat of Solidarity,” by David Ost of the HWS political science faculty.
Andrzej Walicki, one of Poland's leading historians, called it a “genuinely pioneering book” that “breaks with conventional thinking” concerning the meaning of economic and political success in democratizing countries.
Ost's “The Defeat of Solidarity: Anger and Politics in Postcommunist Europe,” was published last year by Cornell University Press.
Ost earned his bachelor's degree from State University at Stony Brook and his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; he
joined the faculty in 1986.
