Alumna Johnson-Aten named principal

Bonnie Johnson-Aten '82 of Montpelier, Vt., was recently named principal of Edmunds Middle School in Burlington, Vt.

She is believed to be the first African American principal in the Burlington school district, the largest city in Vermont. Edmunds is one of two middle schools in the district.

Her father-in-law, Carl Aten, is a professor of chemistry emeritus at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Her stepfather, Charles Kenney, has long attended Statesmen athletic events, and received a heritage award from the city's Martin Luther King Committee at the annual worship service in January 2005, celebrating King's birthday, when HWS President Mark D. Gearan was the featured speaker.
