Robert Cowles, chairman of the HWS Music Department, was music director and orchestra conductor for the Geneva Theatre Guild production of “The Pirates of Penzance,” July 14-16 at the Smith Opera House.
He was introduced by the unseen announcer — who pointed out the exits and warned theatre-goers about cell phones — as “The First Mate in Charge of Musical Ditties.”
Troy Slocum, a piano instructor in the Music Department, was assistant music director and vocal coach for the production. Both have received Excellence in Vocal Direction honors for the show from the Theatre Association of New York State.
Other familiar HWS faces involved in the show were Erika King of the math and computer science faculty, as a pirate; Roberta Whitwood and Brent Stearns, ushers; and Eleanor Stearns, production manager and head of house.
