Workshop helps plan field experiment

More than a dozen scientists from across the United States and Canada gathered Aug. 14-15 at the Finger Lakes Institute, on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, to plan a joint International field experiment.

Neil Laird, assistant professor of geoscience, and the Finger Lakes Institute hosted the effort to study several scientific aspects of winter weather systems that occur near Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

The workshop was the first opportunity to gather nearly 20 scientists who will contribute to planning and conducting the proposed meteorological field experiment during the winter of 2008-09.

Participants came from Penn State, University of Illinois, Cornell, the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research Laboratory, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Wyoming, University at Albany, State University of New York at Oswego, University of Toronto, the Canadian Atmospheric Environment Agency, and the National Weather Service offices in Buffalo, Cleveland and Binghamton.
