Heidi Beach Rejoins the HWS Community as Writing Colleagues Coordinator

The Writing Colleagues Program welcomes Heidi Beach ’02 as Writing Colleagues coordinator at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

An honors graduate in Writing and Rhetoric with a double minor in Women’s Studies and the Writing Colleagues Program, she spent portions of the past four years on the editorial staffs of magazines in San Francisco, as a breakfast chef at an holistic institute, and a property investment adviser and freelance editor in London.

She said the ability to write has been central to her success. “When I reflect on the many lessons and opportunities afforded me as a William Smith student, I am very glad to give back to the Writing Colleagues Program, the Writing and Rhetoric Program and the HWS community.”

While at the Colleges, she spent a semester at Scuola Leonardo DaVinci in Rome, Italy, as well as with ASE’s program in Bath, England; and received an Emerson Scholarship and a Bampton Scholarship.

Dorothy Wickenden ’76, executive editor of The New Yorker, served as the outside examiner for Beach’s honors project.

The Writing Colleagues Program combines practical experience working with students to improve their reading and writing with intellectual inquiry into the social, cultural, psychological, and cognitive processes of language. Completion of the Writing Colleagues Program is valuable preparation for work in teaching, law, journalism, public policy, advertising/marketing, public relations and publishing. The Writing Colleagues Program offers both a disciplinary and an interdisciplinary minor.

Students interested in applying to the Writing Colleagues Program should call Beach at ext. 3807, e-mail her at beach@hws.edu or visit her in 209 Smith Hall.
