The Art Center College of Design has awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Horace Havemeyer III '64.
Havemeyer is the founder and publisher of Metropolis magazine, a leading publication on the art of design. The editor-in-chief of the magazine, Susan Szenasy, was also honored with a degree.
“Our honorary degrees celebrate the values of our institution: recognition of individual achievement and creativity, best practices in design, and social consideration. All of these are brilliantly embodied by Metropolis,” said Richard Koshalek, president of Art Center College of Design. “Horace and Susan richly deserve our recognition for their visionary perspectives on the role of design in the world, as well as our gratitude for their support of our mission and our programs.”
Havemeyer is a veteran of the publishing world, formerly working for Doubleday and serving as an advisor to Skyline, a journal published by the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies.
At the Colleges, Havemeyer was a member of the Sailing Team, the Yacht Club and Sigma Phi fraternity, majoring in English. Havemeyer has also served on the Colleges' Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1985 and from 1991 to 1996.
