Hauser’s Award-Winning Library Addition Published Nationally

The addition to the Cordelia A. Greene Library designed by Assistant Professor of Architecture Rick Hauser, which won AIA Rochester's 2001 Design for Excellence Award, has been nationally published as part of a quarterly insert, “Brick in Architecture,” in Architecture magazine (volume 59, no.1). Hauser's addition involved moving the creek at the rear of the library. Symmetrical brick turrets serve as a staircase on one side and reading nooks on the other, permitting the geometry of the main pavilion to remain distinct. The building maintains its natural architectural proportions while delivering a space that elevates people's appreciation of nature. Hauser said, “I wanted to connect the patrons to the natural beauty of the setting. I wanted people to feel like they were sitting in the woods.”
