The Dance Department of Hobart and William Smith Colleges was represented at the American Colleges Dance Festival Association regional conference in Buffalo by two faculty members and 14 students.
During the March 9-12 festival, the dancers participated in master classes, performed two works for adjudication, and attended five dance concerts.
Faculty members Michelle Iklé and Cynthia Williams taught master classes at the festival, joining colleagues from 31 colleges and universities across the Northeast.
Williams' piece, “Ascension,” was performed by nine William Smith students: Kyla Allison '07, Lindsey Bennett '07, Lauren Budd '10, Diana Carson '07, Anna Dodge '07, Lila Feldman '10, Nina Franzino '09, Jessica Schmitt '07 and Caitlyn Schrader '10.
The choreography was praised for its formal construction and the dancers were commended for their clarity in performance and technique.
Allison's performance of her solo, “Alone,” was also highly praised. The adjudicators said she was “an excellent performer, with strong technique,” and that her movement vocabulary was well chosen.
Other HWS dancers selected to attend the conference included Alexandra Berger '09, Deirdra Evers '08, Elizabeth Fleche '09, Kristen Karwacki and Jessica Zippin '07.
The Dance Department has been sending delegations to the association's conferences since 1988. Having representatives from many schools with dance departments and programs in one site offers students and faculty an opportunity to see a variety of student and professional choreography, attend classes in a wide range of dance styles, and converse with peers and colleagues. This year's Northeast conference was hosted by the University at Buffalo in the Center for the Arts.
