HWS students fare well in Russian language competition

Four HWS students participated in the annual New York Collegiate Russian language competition on Sunday, April 15 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Brittany Burton '07 tied for first place overall, and Harris Goldman '08 tied for third in a field of 19 competitors. Rounding out the local delegation were Katrina Havrish '10 and Robyn Jensen '10.

All four HWS students began their study of Russian at the Colleges and are currently enrolled in Russian 102. Judging was in four events: giving a three-minute autobiographical monologue, sight-reading a passage, reciting a poem and taking a written grammar test.

David Galloway and Irina Mikhaleva of the HWS Russian Area Studies faculty served as judges at this year's competition, which also saw teams from the host school, SUNY-Binghamton, Union College and Hamilton College participating.

This competition has been held annually since 2002, when it was created by faculty at Hobart and William Smith and Union College. Next year's competition will be hosted by HWS.
