Lafford to conduct festival choir

The St. James Festival Choir will present Johannes Brahms' “Requiem” at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6 at St. James Episcopal Church, Montross, Va.

Guest conductor will be Lindsay Lafford, Lord of Ridley, HWS professor of music emeritus. This will be the ninth time he has journeyed from his home in Tempe, Ariz., to conduct the choir. Lafford taught at Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 1948 to 1979, and received an honorary degree in 1987.

The program will open with the premiere of “A Prayer for Church Musicians,” composed by Lafford for this occasion. Nearly two dozen singers from Westmoreland, Richmond and King George counties, as well as the city of Richmond, Va., are expected to participate.
