Alumnus Reed named transplant leader

Dr. Alan I. Reed ’80 MD, has been named director of the Division of Transplant Surgery in the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Surgery, effective Sept. 15.

Reed is currently an associate professor of surgery and surgical director of the college’s liver transplant program at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. Before joining the faculty there, he was on the staff at the University of Rochester.

In his new position, he will direct the Division of Transplant Surgery in the Department of Surgery and the UI Organ Transplant Center. He will also lead plans to develop a state-of-the-art, comprehensive center caring for patients experiencing organ failure and those requiring kidney, pancreas or liver transplants.

A biology major at HWS who completed an honors project, Reed then earned his medical degree at Cornell University Medical College in New York City and completed a general surgery residency at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center and an abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School.

He is a member of several professional organizations and serves on the editorial board of the journal Liver Transplantation and as a reviewer for the American Journal of Transplantation.
