Alumna Brightley helps organize book fair

Reeshemah Brightley '99 was one of the organizers of the ninth annual Harlem Book Fair, held Saturday, July 21 on 135th Street in Manhattan.

A Spanish and Hispanic literature major, she is a member of the William Smith Alumnae Association's executive committee and has been active in the HWS Club of New York City, the Afro-Latino Alumni/ae Association, and has been a class correspondent.

During her time at HWS, she was a member of the Black Student Coalition and the Echo and Pine staff and studied abroad in Madrid, Spain; and the Dominican Republic.

The book fair offered families an opportunity to meet Loretta Long, author of “Courtney's Birthday Party” and Sonia Hayes, author of “The Atl Girlz (Urban Goddess).” The day also included panel discussions on family reading, performances, and workshops.

Former Congressman J.C. Watts also delivered the annual State of African American Literacy address before a nationally televised audience.
