Professor of Religious Studies Emerita Mary Gerhart, who taught here from 1972 until 2005, is keeping herself busy in retirement, just as she did while teaching full-time.
She and Fabian E. Udoh of the University of Notre Dame, formerly of HWS, are co-authors of “The Christianity Reader,” newly published by the University of Chicago Press.
The 850-plus pages include nearly 300 selections and are divided into eight themed areas, including Biblical traditions and interpretations, early influences, patterns of worship, structures of community, current issues and challenges, and the contemporary relationship of Christianity with other religions.
Gerhart, holds a bachelor's degree from St. Teresa College, master's degrees from the University of Missouri and the University of Chicago, and her doctorate from Chicago.
She and Professor of Physics Emeritus Allan W. Russell received a teaching prize from the John Templeton Foundation honoring their joint work.
Gerhart is also the author of “Semeia 43: Genre, Narrativity, And Theology,” and “Genre Choices, Gender Questions,” and has contributed to several other works.
