Associate Professor of Latino/Africana Studies Marilyn Jimenez was featured in an R News story about an antique book being auctioned on March 1.
Describing the book to be sold, a first-edition copy of David Walker's “Appeal in Four Articles,” she said, “His call for African-American men to be men, as opposed to the brute they were very often portrayed as — in many ways that image of the brute, the stereotype of the brute continues today.”
Walker's book was a call to violent revolt and was banned almost immediately after being published.
Jimenez said Walker's message is also important for today's generations to hear.
A member of the faculty since 1984 and the current chair of the African Studies program, Jimenez holds a B.A. from Barnard, two master's and her Ph.D. from Columbia University.
