May 18, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Colleges will provide the setting for the first of two conferences designed to bring New York State college presidents together to discuss ways in which institutions of higher learning can contribute to the economic development of their regions and of the state, as well as to talk about federal aid to education.

On Monday, May 21, Senator Hillary Clinton will convene more than 20 colleges presidents from the Western, Northern, and Central portions of the state on the HWS campus. Attached is a list of the colleges who will be represented.

Later this year, a second conference will be held at Rensselaer Polytecnic Institute for presidents from the Eastern and downstate regions.

Hobart and William Smith President Mark D. Gearan said he is pleased that the conference could be held on the beautiful Geneva campus. “I am delighted to host my fellow college presidents in a meeting with our new Senator. Colleges and universities have an important role to play in the economic development of upstate New York,” President Gearan said.
