GENEVA, N.Y. – Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark D. Gearan will join the ranks of the Rev. Robert Drinan, Mayor Rudolph Guiliani, and a host of other leaders in the legal profession when he delivers the address at the annual Chemung County Red Mass on May 1, in Elmira.
The Red Mass is a traditional Catholic service seeking God's blessing for judges, the legal profession, and government officials. Elmira's Red Mass tradition dates back to 1984. Gearan will discuss the role of law and government service in the new millennium.
While in Elmira, Gearan will also speak at Notre Dame High School and at Holy Family Junior High. Between the two schools he will share stories with more than 500 students about his experiences as director of the Peace Corps and as president of Hobart and William Smith. Gearan is an exemplar for young people because of his commitment to building a better world through education and public service.
Gearan and his family are parishioners at St. Stephen's Church.
