GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart and William Smith Colleges will host the Taylor 2 modern dance company for a dance residency in the HWS Department of Dance, from September 23 through October 13. A welcoming reception and excerpt performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, in the Winn-Seeley Gym-Theater. The Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, at the Smith Opera House, Geneva, as part of the Geneva Concerts series. The public is invited.
Sandy Stone, Taylor 2 rehearsal director and former member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, will instruct dance repertory, movement, and technique classes at the Colleges. Dancers in the Taylor 2 Company will visit various sites in Geneva and the local community, including Geneva City Schools, New York Chiropractic College, The Living Centers at Geneva North and South, Geneva Boys and Girls Club, and YMCA, Thompson Health Facility, and Finger Lakes wineries.
Paul Taylor Dance Company, now in its 42nd year, celebrates the artistry of Paul Taylor and performs his dances throughout the world. As Taylor continues to create new works, the critical acclaim for premieres and revivals alike resounds. The Company’s history includes performances in over 400 cities in more than 60 nations. It has represented the United States at arts festivals in over 40 different countries, and has completed 11 tours sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
Taylor 2 was established in 1993 under the direction of Linda Hodes to accommodate the demands on the Paul Taylor Dance Company for increased teaching and community outreach. Like the original Taylor ensemble of 1954, Taylor 2 is comprised of professionals with a particular gift for the choreographer’s style who can introduce Paul Taylor’s work to audiences in markets not able to accommodate the larger Company.
In selecting repertory for Taylor 2, Paul Taylor chooses dances that reveal the broad spectrum of his work. Currently, the Company’s repertory includes works such as Airs, Arden Court, Book of Beasts, Company B, Esplanade, Funny Papers, Images, and Runes. Performed in various combinations, they introduce new audiences to the athleticism, humor, and range of emotions found in the work of Paul Taylor.
For more information on the dance residency contact Donna Davenport, HWS associate professor of dance, at 781-3760 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
In collaboration with the Colleges, the Paul Taylor Dance Company performance is sponsored by Geneva Concerts, Inc., with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the John Ben Snow Foundation, and the Citigroup Foundation.
The welcoming reception and brief Taylor 2 performance are free; tickets for the October 13 performance are $20 general admission, $10 for children. Tickets are available at The Smith Opera House and Martin Music in Geneva, The Copy Shop in Seneca Falls, and Mobile Music in Canandaigua.
